You work hard.
You need to rest hard.
Period.
For a long time, I thought rest was something you do after the work is done.
At night. On weekends. On vacation.
I was pushing through with caffeine and willpower.
It worked.
Until it didn’t.
I didn’t run out of time.
I run out of energy.
What I realized in my own energy management journey is that a more sustainable approach is taking frequent, high‑quality rest – daily, not as a reward at the end of the week.
There are four types of rest we all need (see image):
– Physical: letting the body recover and recharge
– Mental: reducing cognitive load and decision fatigue
– Emotional: processing feelings and protecting boundaries
– Spiritual: reconnecting with values, purpose, and meaning
We often focus only on physical rest.
But long-term performance requires you paying attention to all four.
Long‑term performance isn’t about pushing harder.
It’s about managing energy – every day.
